I had so much fun hanging out with Miss Longfellow and Mr. Mulberry in this historical fiction novel. At first this story reminded me of Mary Poppins professional nanny; who did things a little differently than most. The kids loved her and the parents questioned her methods. Mr. Everett Mulberry says to Miss Longfellow; “Where are the children?”“They are perfectly fine, Mr. Everett. I’ve tied them up in the nursery.”
“Forgive me, but you didn’t just say you’ve tied up the children, did you?”
“Indeed I did…Oh, I’ve never tied children up before today. Before you dismiss me – something your expression clearly states you long to do – the whole tying-up business was the children’s idea.”
“You would have me believe they wanted you to tie them up?”
“Don’t be silly. If you must know, they insisted on tying me up first; but obviously, since I’m standing in front of you, I was able to free myself…In the spirit of fair play, I convinced them it was their turn to be held captive.”
As the story went along and Miss Longfellow got to know Mr. Everett Mulberry and his 3 wards the story had elements of the Sound of Music. Then near the end the story reminded me of the Cinderella movie titled Ever After with Drew Barrymore. There was an elegant ball and a mystery that needed to be solved. There was so much I enjoyed about this novel. I adored Miss Millie Longfellow; she was creative in interacting with the children, she had spunk and wit. I also enjoyed the authors quirky and love-able secondary characters. Oh, there is someone to dislike too, Caroline. She was just mean.
I also adored the fact that Millie was fascinated by words. She took great delight in discovering a new word and trying to use it properly. One of Millie’s friends Lucetta says to Millie, “What a wonderful use of the word disposed.”
“Millie turned to Lucetta, “I learned it just today – from Mrs. Cutling, of all people – As well as the word abhorrent, but I haven’t yet been able to fit that appropriately into any of my conversations so far.”
This author is creative, and witty, as she sprinkled in plenty of humor, twists and turns and fun dialogue. I was hooked from the first line, “Consider yourself dismissed. Effective…immediately.” I instantly connected with Millie and felt bad about her situation! My heart went out to her as she put her whole-being into whatever she did. She wasn’t a quitter.
I loved hanging out with these larger than life believable characters who maneuvered the rules and manners of rich society. This is the first novel I’ve read by this amazing author, it definitely won’t be the last.
I highly recommend this delightful read for pure fun. It would make a great read for your book club pick as well. There is so much in here. It will leave you wanting more! You'll be searching out the other books this author has written! I know I did!

Millie the dictionary toting nanny, finally finds a job caring for Mr. Everett Mulberry's three orphaned wards. Her methods are unorthodox but very effective as she tames the children with wit and love. Danger also lurks in the form of Caroline the rich woman that Everett has been courting, along with suspicion about the children's parents supposed accidental death.
In Good Company is a delightful book. It is entertaining and fun to read. The nanny with unconventional means of dealing with children. Who would not want to read it. There is adventures galore. Jen Turano did not disappoint in this book. I enjoy reading her works and will continue to look forward to what she produces.
I received this book from the Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion.
I love Jen Turano books! This one was fun and exciting with lots of lovable characters! Just like her other books the witty dialogue is the key to a great story and fun plot twists! It's not all fluff though there are adventures and serious exploration of class prejudice and societal justice!
Millie is a hoot. This is a sweet story which gave my daughter and I quite a few good chuckles. For all those Moms looking for a good story for their daughters to read which is clean and safe - In good Company is for you.
A very cute story which is hysterically funny at times and a truly enjoyable read. I really appreciate reading a well-crafted book as there are no annoying spelling, grammar, or punctuation problems here! For this genre, it's definitely a 4 1/2 star, but I have to save those 5 star ratings for the truly sublime pieces of enduring literature. I will be reading more from this author.
This book started a little slow for me, but in true Turano fashion the story charmed its way into my full attention. DID NOT like Everett Mulberry at the start, but he SLOWLY won his way into my approval and I loved how he became the family man he was meant to be )
Could. Not. Stand Caroline Dixon from start to finish. Worst character EVER! It didn't help that I've known women like her in real life so that made her more tangible to me. I loved it when Millie hits her in the head with a tennis ball, even though it was an accident. Caroline calls the children little monsters, deviants, and a burden to Everett's life throughout the story. At first I thought she was just a spoiled brat, but that it wasn't her fault since she had been raised to be like one. However, she is much worse than that, but it was good she was a wicked character because she helped make the plot more exciting. Loved it also when the peacocks SHE bought gave her a scare, so pitiful.
Really loved Lucetta in this story AND Everett's parents. Dorothy and Lester were wonderful in telling Everett how sorry they were for not being there for him during his childhood and how they had found their faith in God after being inspired by another family. They were minor characters in the story, but a perfect addition to everything going on. Also LOVED the staff and how they defended/protected Millie. Abigail was also wonderful, but her matchmaking attempts were a little annoying at times (did the ladies REALLY need a tiara for the ball??). Still love her, but no need to meddle all the time.
It was also a nice touch that the puppies in the story were from the adorable dog in After A Fashion.
One of my fave parts of the story is Millie and her love of words, always carrying around a dictionary. I think the dictionary got ruined at one point so Everett would help her use the proper words, so delightful!
The children were the heart and soul of this story.....Elizabeth, Rose and Thaddeus. They were scheming, clever, precious, sweet, hurting children who just needed assurances that they would be loved and not sent off to boarding school. REALLY enjoyed the mystery behind their parents' deaths and how all of it was resolved. They made me laugh and cry more than once )
Looking forward to the conclusion of this series and what will happen next with Lucetta, Turano knows how to charm her readers with these stories!! )
