Stranger in a New World follows the journey of a young man on a quest for truth, a journey that ultimately leads him to walking Spain's Camino de Santiago.
Hello, my name is Adam, and this is the true story about a journey that changed my life.
I have been debating different ways to tell it for the longest time. Finally, I realized the best thing to do was tell the truth.
It was October, 2012 and after graduating college in New Jersey at the tender age of twenty-two, I headed to Zurich, Switzerland for a three month business project. The plan was to stay with my mother, who lives in Zurich, and work from October until December before heading back home to New York.
Of course, plans change and so do we. After finishing work in December I spent two very special weeks with my sister in San Francisco, all the while contemplating my next move.
“Should I look for a job in Zurich or New York?” was the inescapable question. Most of my friends at the time were either in New York entering the second year of their careers or in graduate school.
Of course, my time away didn’t come without consequences. I will spare you the details, but let’s just say that time together is no match for distance apart. My heart was broken and I was a mess.
Why am I telling you this?
It is important to note that this entire journey was built on the foundation of love – there would be no story to tell without it. I was a completely confused twenty-two year old with a broken heart, obsessed with finding purpose in a world full of empty opportunity.
My journey took me from San Francisco to Berlin, Germany, where I lived alone for three months before embarking on the Camino de Santiago, a walking pilgrimage from Southern France across Spain. I walked thirty-six days on the Camino before heading back to New York. The memories, experiences, and lessons learned during my time in Berlin and my walk across Spain are etched into the fabric of who I am today.
The search for Truth is a very personal quest, and for a long time I was uncomfortable sharing my story. Eventually I realized that protecting my truth from the world was playing small and helped no-one, not even me.
It should be noted that I was very fortunate to have two valuable resources a little money saved up and time. This is not a luxury afforded to everyone and I am very grateful for the opportunities that became available because of it.
I am certainly no expert. I have experiences, not answers, and have found that the more I learn the less I understand.
With that said, welcome to my world – I hope you enjoy your stay.
Stranger in a New World From Berlin to Santiago A Pilgrim Journey eBook Arik Zeevy
Arik's book is the eighteenth account I have read about pilgrims on the camino. His is on the top of my list. I have read a few that recount history, myths, and more history. That is interesting one time. I am more interested in the personal journey taken by people who choose to walk 500 miles. Here is where Adam's book shines. It is personal, introspective, and inspiring. His self-knowledge as a young man in his early twenties blew me away. I think it's his ability to put his experiences into words that is so profound. "We are sitting on a giant rock floating through space, this gargantuan fire ball is burning down on us, and it's just another day in the life, I thought, looking up at the sun and then back down to the sea of bobbing heads in the square. Sometimes...I don't know man... This s*** is just nuts." I have thought of this many times in my life....but I couldn't say it like this! And one more: "I felt myself giving in and letting go. I let go of the pain, the expectations, the desires. Let go of the search for truth, the thirst for answers, the cycle of torture that I inflict upon myself. Let go of trying. I'm sick and tired of trying. I gave myself up and said, 'I am here, I am weak, I am yours.'" He gives enough nitty gritty details of the physical toll the pilgrimage took on his body and introduces an interesting cast of characters met along the way. His words are reminders to me to be alert, to be in touch with myself, and to see every day as part of the journey. I hope this author KEEPS WRITING!Product details

Stranger in a New World From Berlin to Santiago A Pilgrim Journey eBook Arik Zeevy Reviews
I have hiked the 500 miles and Adam's experience was right on target. Thank you for such a wholesome,
heart warming story of your experience hiking the Camino.
Since I know Arik very well and work with him on a daily basis, I've put off reading this book for way too long. I've heard many of these stories first hand but the way he tells his story in this book are much more engaging and beautifully written. As I read this book I couldn't help but wish I had the courage to break out of my comfort zone at an earlier age and experience my own self discovery like he did. Excellent read and highly recommended!
This story is so raw, emotional and delivered with such unmatched authenticity that it keeps the reader engaged from the onset. This story makes me want to walk the Camino and experience the peaks and valleys that come with the journey, both introspectively and outwardly.
I highly recommend this book if you want to truly feel a writer's words and thoughts for what they are, while garnering full-fledged inspiration for your own life.
The author does an amazing job of putting into words all of the emotions I felt during my own travels but never knew how to express. This book is the perfect combination of personal yet relatable, and it was really hard to put down. Filled with honesty and witty sarcasm, Stranger in a New World constantly makes you reflect on your own story as you read Adam's. There were multiple times I had to remind myself I wasn't the one walking the Camino, because the imagery and detail made me feel really connected to the characters. A must read for anyone who has traveled or ever wants to.
I found reading this account of life and walking the Camino to be truely inspirational. As I intend walking this myself in 2016 I find this account of it to be what I am hoping to the most accurate. I have so far read about 16 books on the camino and found this one be really helpful. Good luck in your future life.
This book is honest, at times painfully relatable to struggles we face in growing, changing and making decisions about life and what might happen next. It's raw and incredibly vivid. Arik brings you with him on this journey of self discovery and you can tell he is still on this journey as he re-writes his accounts of this incredible time in his life. He made me want to walk with him, learn from the Camino and understand if his physical pain was somehow a reflection of his emotional pain at the same time. It's a quick read and each chapter, journal entry or letter makes you want to know what's going to happen next not only in his life but on the Camino. I would love to hear more from this author and highly recommend this read! Riveting, emotional and exciting!
It's hard being 22. It is also really difficult to put a journey of self discovery into words, and ultimately articulate it well enough to fluently transform those thoughts into a book, yet this is something Zeevy does with grace and ease. Having not known anything about the Camino de Santiago prior to reading this account, I came away feeling as though I was right there on the pilgrimage. I felt invested in his story from the first page, journal entries and email exerpts sprinkled throughout the book give it an added personal quality (I also liked the pictures at the end). I really enjoyed reading about the friendships that were formed and his observations of the world and of other pilgrims, it all seemed very genuine. If only we knew what happens with Alyssa at the end!
