Together Tea Marjan Kamali Books

I commented, cried and laughed all along the novel.
I drunk it with a straw by moments, with big gulps at others, especially towards the end, staying awake until 1:00 am to finish it.
Needless to say, I loved it.

The narration is realistic and rich. It encompasses so many themes: love, emotions (hardship, and beauty all along), colors, scents, images, and strong vital, meaningful messages.
I appreciated the presence of the war without being overwhelming. That was another challenge mastered by Marjan Kamali.
When Darya and Mina returned to Iran, I wanted to take a plane ticket and go there too.
Actually, I was there, with each character, and adored them all, Larviz and Mamani in particular.
Marjan Kamali took my the hand and showed me a fascinating culture.

Marjan Kamali interestingly addresses the difficult issue of not belonging, among so many others.
One doesn't need to be Iranian to not belong anywhere, even though it doesn't help, especially nowadays.

I’ll present a letter of doléances to my Farsi friend for all the foods I didn’t taste at her home during our twenty years of friendship :). Marjan Kamali brought water to my mouth more than once.

Finally, I have a complaint, the book is translated in Italian and German but neither in French nor Spanish.
I can’t wait for the next novel.

Together Tea Marjan Kamali Books Reviews

What a delightful read! I especially recommend the kindle version as the narrator did a fantastic job of capturing the tone of the book.
What did I like most? The characters are so believable and I was so taken by their stories. I can't wait for Ms. Kamali's next book. She is a talented writer. This is the sort of book where one is sad to see it end so soon.
Together Tea brings a lot of elements that I personally love in a book -- humor, family dynamics, vivid descriptions, and a twist ending. Kamali's debut novel has all of these elements but is so much more. It's not a long book, so all of the words including the Persian words sprinkled liberally throughout are meaningful to the overall story. The raw emotions set against the tumultuous background of the Iranian Revolution make for a compelling tale. Despite the serious backdrop this is a fun read -- with the carefree tone of a Judy Blume book and that pitch perfect perspective of the immigrant/first generation experience (a la Jhumpa Lahiri). Special mention must be made of the sumptuous descriptions of Persian dishes which give special insight into the hospitality and care of the Persian culture which we think we know, but don't really know at all. No matter what your background, you will fall in the love with the characters and want to read the book over and over just to spend time with them again.
This is the story of a family who lived in Iran, and when war broke out got out and went to the United States. The story is told from the daughter's and mother's viewpoint,. The daughter is young when they leave, . This is the story of how America changes all the family. How they adjust.
The father of the family is a doctor in Iran. But in America he works at a pizza place until he qualifies as a doctor. The mother is a math wiz, who has a hobby of looking for a husband for her daughter.
After college the daughter decides to return to Iran for a visit. Mother and daughter go. Things are very different, but the people they love that they left behind are the same, but older.
This is a warm book. I enjoyed it very much , and learned much about the culture.
I really enjoyed this novel, about an Iranian family that came over to the USA after the grandmother is killed by a bomb during the start of the Iranian revolution in the 1970's.
I thought this was going to be just a fun light read, but this book had so much more to it. I saw it as a study of choices, and in a way the guilt, happiness and sadness that comes with those choices.
The pull between the homeland and the adopted land, the traditions of their homeland being kept up even while not there.
This story mainly focuses on the mother/daughter relationship and the pull between the modern day practices of the USA and those that the mother cannot forget from her life in Iran.
Part way through the story, In the 1990's mother and daughter return for a trip back to Iran, to visit relatives that they were not able to say goodbye to when they left the country. Daughter Mina, wants to find out who she is and what is important to her, and the mother Darya, has never forgotten her life there. The time in Iran is rich in family, food, visual images of the beauty of the country, which I loved to read about, but as well the dangers of being back there at that time, with all of the strict rules applied to women. Here on this journey Mina is at last able to find a happy medium between her two worlds. I in a way could relate to her feelings of not really belonging to either country, as I was also born in one place but raised in another.
"Together Tea" elegantly captures the inner conflict that comes with partially belonging to two different worlds, and not fully belonging to either. It brings to life the sounds, smells, and feelings associated with Mina's original life in Tehran; the feelings of anxiety and fear experienced when the Iranian revolution took place and life as she knew it no longer existed; and the conflicting feelings of relief and alienation that she felt when starting her new life in the U.S. Having myself moved to the U.S. At the age of 14, I truly identified with the challenges Mina faced when first moving there, and then again with the irritation she felt at being pressured into traditional relationships many years later after she had somewhat assimilated into the American way of life. The author did an excellent job of portraying the impact of displacement and of the related cultural tension on both Mina and her mom--the younger and older generation. Both of them needed to go back to their roots to come to peace with the people they had become, the importance of both their native and adopted cultures in their lives--but above all the importance of family. Marjan Kamali writes with honesty and soul. I look forward to reading more from her.
